emancipation was finally accomplished was, considering its importance, the shortest in the history of human Legislation, and for that reason may be quoted in full. "Article I. Slavery is declared abolished in Brazil from the day of the promulgation of this law. Article II. All contrary dispositions are abrogated". This is an achievement of his reign of which Dom Pedro has more reason to be proud than even of the defeat of many insurrections or of the pacification and unification of the country which has placed it on the high road of progress, and made its Government a model for European admiration. When he comes to celebrate his golden wedding with Brazil he will have a fifty years' record of work to look back upon for which history can offer no worthy parallel."(*) Nota do Autor
